To transport my tent poles safely in a duffel bag in the cargo hold of a plane, I packed them in a 20 inch long piece of 3 inch diameter PVC pipe. I was a little nervous that TSA would mistake it for a pipe bomb.
I didn't mention this before because I didn't think it was wise to mention TSA" and "pipe bomb" in a blog post before boarding an airplane.
